Growing Fruit
Workshop - April 17
Set
for Saturday April 17th, 2010 we have a growing fruit workshop
planned. The presenter, Peter Coppin, acknowledged fruit growing expert from Perth is attending and
sharing his considerable experience. Peter was formerly a
Senior Horticultural Advisor at the Department of Agriculture's
Garden Advisory Centre and Small Property Advisory Service for ten
years. The previous 17 years were spent in fruit and nut
research at the Stoneville Horticultural Research Station. He
has lectured at TAFE, Curtin University and other tertiary
institutions, runs short courses and seminars for the public, and
has managed a family orchard in the hills. He actively
supports the planting of trees for fruit, nut or timber production,
not just as ornamentals.
The cost will be $30 for members, $40 for non-members. We
will cater for refreshments for morning and afternoon teas but
request you self-cater for lunch as this helps us keep costs
down significantly.
The
venue will be the Bridgetown Gardens function centre, Kangaroo Gully
(mud
map here), commencing registrations at 9:00 a.m., the
workshop starting promptly at 9:30 a.m.
We
aim to cover the following topics:
- Soil and Climatic Requirements
- Growing Systems and Tree Establishment
- Tree Canopy and Crop Management
- Pest and Disease Control
...and have the possibility of a short field tour at a nearby
property at the end of the day.

Small Farm Field Day
April 24th is when this comes around again. A very
worthwhile day, we are planning a presence at this event. This
year's theme is "Food for Thought" and we are wanting to showcase
the sorts of things our members do with their properties in terms of
food and produce.
